Pranayama & Yoga Nidra

The breath refined, the mind at rest

Two quiet arts, taught together — the energy of the breath and the stillness of conscious rest.

Twice a week, the practice turns inward. First the breath: classical pranayama to steady the nervous system and gather the mind. Then Yoga Nidra — the ancient art of deep, conscious rest, in which the body sleeps while awareness stays clear. An hour that undoes the noise of the week and prepares the ground for meditation.

Part of the BYK Sadhaka Membership

This practice isn’t sold on its own

Your yoga classes come as part of one membership — together with Pranayama & Yoga Nidra, Yoga Sangha and the lunar meditations. One fee, both levels, everything included.

Why one membership
A practice is one river, not four streams

Asana steadies the body. The breath gathers the mind. Yogic rest restores it. Scripture lights the path. Chanting and meditation bring stillness. These were never meant to be bought as separate courses — they are one practice, supporting each other. As a Sadhaka member, you receive all of it, at whatever level you practise, for a single fee.

“Asanas and pranayama help to bring changes in you so that not only you are physically healthy, but also your mind becomes calm.” ~Sri M

What we practise
One hour, two movements

Each session moves from effort to effortlessness — the breath disciplined first, the body and mind then given complete rest.

The first half · the breath

Pranayama

Classical breath practices from the Hatha texts, taught progressively and with care — steady sitting postures, breath awareness and regulation, and the meditative techniques of the lineage: Hum-Sau, Om meditation and Chakra Dharana. The aim is not performance but refinement: a nervous system harmonised, a mind gathered to one point.

he second half · the rest

Yoga Nidra

The yogic art of conscious deep rest. Lying still, guided by the teacher’s voice, the body is released layer by layer while awareness remains lucid — a state older than modern relaxation techniques and deeper than ordinary sleep. Practised regularly, it restores the body, settles the emotions and opens the door to meditation.

Why it matters
The bridge between movement and meditation

Steadies the system

Where asana works on the body, pranayama works on the subtle energy behind it — calming, balancing and strengthening from within.

Teaches true rest

Most of us have forgotten how to rest. Yoga Nidra retrains that capacity — twenty minutes of it can undo the tiredness a night of shallow sleep cannot.

Opens meditation

A regulated breath and a rested mind are the classical prerequisites of dhyana. This session is where the deeper practices of the path become possible.

Membership questions
Frequently asked

Some prior asana practice is recommended, so that sitting steadily for breath work is comfortable — the membership’s yoga classes provide exactly that grounding. If you have a serious cardiac or respiratory condition, please take your physician’s clearance before joining, and tell your teacher.

No, though the body rests as deeply as in sleep. Yoga Nidra is a guided practice done lying down, in which awareness stays clear while the body and mind release completely. You’ll be led through it step by step; there is nothing to “do” and no way to fail at it.

A quiet spot, a mat, and something to cover yourself with for the Yoga Nidra portion — the body cools as it rests. A steady chair works for the pranayama if sitting on the floor is difficult.

Recordings are available to members for a week. That said, Yoga Nidra especially rewards the live session — set the hour aside if you can.

Yes. The 6:30am – 7:15am IST slot falls in the morning East Asia and Australia; members in the Europe often use the recording.

Pranayama & Yoga Nidra is part of the BYK Sadhaka Membership, which also includes the yoga classes, Yoga Sangha, the Gita Circle and the lunar meditations — one fee for everything. See the membership page for plans and to enrol.
